About the Theatre

What is this initiative in a nutshell?

Beginning its 17th season as Downtown Orlando’s professional theater, Mad Cow Theatre now has a facility that is of commensurate quality to the dynamic professional productions on our stages. Mad Cow has designed a comprehensive venue to create productions of the highest artistic quality that includes two intimate performance spaces. Additionally, the complex includes facilities to provide Central Floridians and visitors to our region with nationally recognized theater experiences that ignite the imagination, lift the spirit and engage our community. There’s nothing like it in Central Florida.

Why does Orlando need this theatre?

Great cities deserve a great theatre. Just as Chicago has Steppenwolf, Minneapolis has The Guthrie, and Washington D.C. has Arena Stage, Orlando has Mad Cow Theatre. The Dr. Phillips Center for Performing Arts is addressing the needs of our other major cultural organizations, including the Orlando Ballet and the Orlando Philharmonic, to have a first-rate performance venue. Now, our new complex completes that work by providing a first-class home for Mad Cow, Downtown Orlando’s Theatre, which will serve as a hub for Central Florida’s vital cultural community.
At Mad Cow Theatre, we produce all of our shows in Orlando contracting over 200 artists annually. Mad Cow Theatre purposefully makes art that creates the opportunity for meaningful conversations on topics that have resonance in our community. And, as the region continues to grow in both population and stature, so do the expectations of Mad Cow and its facilities.

How much money has Mad Cow raised and what is Mad Cow’s fundraising goal?

To date, we’ve raised approximately $2.8 million in one of the most challenging fundraising environments in generations towards the new theater. We are currently seeking $400,000 to complete the project.

What kind of major gifts has Mad Cow received?

Initial support for the project was received from The City of Orlando and 55 West. Additional funds for this campaign have come from individuals who have a passion for the great work created and performed at Mad Cow Theatre. Our focus has expanded to corporations and foundations while we continue to seek larger contributions from individual donors.
